Description

The Manager/Research Associate will assist in establishment and operation of nutritional research and bio-instrumentation laboratories at Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, A.O. Williams Hall. The candidate must be familiar with operating instruments including AA, GC/MS, HPLC, ICP, and other instruments in the facility and oversee analyses of feeds, foods and other products. The incumbent will also assist other scientists in carrying out analysis of plants and plant products, develop new methods of analysis, develop quality control protocols, prepare procedures manuals, maintain a good inventory of laboratory chemicals and supplies and order materials as needed. The incumbent will also ensure lab safety according to established safety policies/regulations and maintain good laboratory records, keep laboratory results in good order, maintain an organized research database, develop preliminary reports from the various analyses, supervise laboratory technicians and student assistants, manage the day-to-day functioning of the laboratory and routinely make sure all equipment are functioning and operational. In addition, the incumbent will be expected to participate in writing grant proposals and manuscript preparation as well as preparing and presenting results at conferences, seminars, workshops, field days, and etc.

Qualifications

Minimal Qualifications:

The candidate must have a B.S. or M.S. in Agricultural Sciences such as Food Science with experience in writing grant proposals, conducting research, developing new methods of analysis, preparing reports, publications and managing day-to-day function of the laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to assist in developing research programs that addresses current and emerging issues specially in the area of food and nutrition. The successful candidate must have a high level of communication skills both orally and graphically. Experiences in working with socially disadvantaged, limited source population and students are needed. Salary range is from $45,000-$50,000 commensurate with experience. This position is funded by NIFA federal research grant 621645-65400-62000. Employment package includes health insurance, retirement plan, worker's compensation, annual and sick leave.
