Description

Student Orientation, Leadership, and Development Coordinator – S.O.L.D.

Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical College is a world class research institution and America’s oldest and only historically Black University system of schools. For more than a century Southern has educated, nurtured and empowered citizens of the world focused on global change, leadership and service. Southern University and A& M seeks an Orientation Coordinator who is able to establish a framework for new student and parent and family orientation programs to support institutional recruitment, student onboarding processes, retention and graduation goals.

The Coordinator of New Student programs supports the Office of the Dean of Students in overseeing the implementation, planning and development of programming for all new and transfer students, including all orientation programs, student workshops, and signature events. The Coordinator chairs an Orientation Steering Committee and serves as a liaison to appropriate campus departments, including Academic Colleges and Departments, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and others.

Responsibilities:

    Design and implement strategic plans and overall vision for the department that support new student engagement, personal and academic success, and retention.
    Oversee the hiring, training, orientation, leadership and management of Orientation Leaders.
    Oversee and direct the planning of major new student initiatives including new, transfer international and commuter student orientation, parent and family orientation, and welcome week; lead collaborative efforts across the institution to enroll, yield and retain new students.
    Lead and manage the orientation budget.
    Assess and evaluate the orientation and other programs and manage online data and reporting systems. Collect and disseminate data from programs to evaluate the effectiveness of all programs and events.
    Create monthly, mid-year and annual reports to the Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs.
    Develop marketing and publication materials for the orientation program in partnership with the Communications office.
    Chair the Orientation Steering and Planning Committee and work to develop first-year student success programs and services. Serve on other University-wide committees at the discretion of the Dean of Students or Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs.
    Assist with programming and events for the Office of the Dean of Students.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

The ideal candidate should have a Master’s degree, and at least three years of professional experience in new student programs or equivalent higher education experience. Knowledge, understanding and application of best practices in new student orientation, transition programs and retention. Experience in long term strategic planning, assessment, and program evaluation is preferred. Involvement in the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA) and other professional associations dedicated to the development of New Student Orientation. A strong commitment to the University's recruitment, orientation, retention and graduation goals and mission is also required. The candidate must possess a valid driver's license.

In addition, the candidate must:
    A history of enthusiastically embracing the value and mission of a historically black land grant institution.
    Specialized knowledge of student development theory and best practices as it pertains to working with new student orientation, transition and retention.
    Project a positive image of service which represents department and division. Demonstrate success or desire to with academic administration, faculty committees and governance groups, and student leadership organizations and a strong background in program and policy development and implementation.
    A collegial, friendly, flexible, adaptable and collaborative approach to student development, leadership and campus culture. Discreet judgment and confidentiality are expected.
    Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks with a strong attention to detail, deadlines and effective management of time.
    Ability to be self-directed, self-motivated, and work independently with supervision.
    Effective verbal and written communication skills and excellent organizational ability/skills. Able to accept and respond to constructive criticism.
    Must demonstrate the ability to effectively delegate tasks.
    Demonstrate strong public relations skills, including being assertive, helpful, sensitive and tactful in working with staff, faculty, students, parents and families.
    A keen ability to manage details accurately such as proof reading, scheduling, coordinating events, maintaining records.
    Must be willing to work evenings and weekends, attend staff meetings, training programs and appropriate activities as required of the position and/or requested.
    Model good stewardship of institutional human and financial resources.
    Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and social media.
