Description

The Assistant Extension Agent will provide overall leadership for non-formal youth development education in Orleans parish and work with volunteers to plan and organize a well-balanced Youth Development Program that promotes the Youth Educational Support after school program, 4-H clubs, community development and other community youth programs. The agent's appointment will be 100% Youth Development. The agent will target at-risk youth to expand program diversity and delivery. Program delivery includes Youth Educational Support after school programs, 4-H school and community clubs, residential and day camps, school enrichment, leadership programs, short-term special interest groups and community service learning. The agent will be responsible for working with program advisory committees to identify local youth needs, to develop programs that respond to those needs, and to assess the impacts of the programs. The identification, recruitment, training, and support of volunteers are essential for an effective Youth Development Program. The successful applicant must be willing to continue professional development and remain current with youth development research and its application to programming. The agent is expected to perform other tasks that will be assigned by Southern University Ag. Center, Parish chairperson and to work cooperatively with Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center and LSU Ag Center faculty at the parish, district, and state levels. Primary domicile is Orleans parish.

Qualifications

Required qualifications include a B.S. degree in agricultural education, agricultural sciences, family and consumer sciences, biological or social sciences, or closely related areas. The applicant must have an undergraduate degree with an overall grade-point average of at least 2.5 (all GPA requirements based on a 4.0 system) and a 3.0 for graduate work attempted, if any, or master’s degree with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 or current grade point average of at least 3.0 or at least 12 hours of graduate credit. A Master’s degree in a field listed above is desired. Experience in recruiting, training and supervising volunteers and experience in teaching and applying principles of leadership development and community development to both youth and adults is also desired. A personal automobile and appropriate insurance coverage is required (travel allowance provided).
